Irwin's Translation is Indispensable... but some cautions

I would not hesitate to recommend Irwin's Hackett edition to anyone who wants to undertake the real work of understanding Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics."

The translation & the interpretation underlying it are not perfect. Other translations may in some (even many) cases be based on interpretations I would prefer. So why is Irwin better? Because his is the only version that lets the reader see the nuts and bolts--that is, just how trickily ambiguous Aristotle's text so often is, and just what the translator has done to interpret it and make sense of it. Only with this extra apparatus can a Greekless reader have some confidence in forming his or her own understanding. And even most of us who know Greek are dependent on commentaries and interpretations like Irwin's to force ourselves to confront real issues and possibilities of meaning that we might clumsily miss as we read the Greek.

Since the strength of Irwin's translation is its clearly labelled interpretative moves, I think it is worth considering looking for the out-of-print FIRST edition (ISBN 0915145669). In the first edition, Irwin intrudes his own section headings at the rate of at least ten per Bekker page. These help you know exactly how Irwin is taking the argument (and again, even if you disagree, the value of a translation lies in offering an interpretation that makes some sense). For example, at 1143b6 and following, Irwin's headings say of understanding "It seems to grow naturally..." and then later "...But in fact it requires experience." NO ONE reading the Greek out of context could possibly come up with this contrast, which basically assumes that Aristotle's Greek is misleadingly written (really straining the idea of a result clause, in this instance) in order to make Aristotle make more consistent sense.

Irwin's notes are great. He offers TONS of cross references. It reminds me of a really good study Bible, with zillions of references to other passages packed in along the margins. (In Irwin, these notes are in the back.) Aristotle is a systematic thinker, even if he looks at things from different angles at different times. The kind of comparative reading encouraged by these references is the only way to understand Aristotle.

In short, this is a great edition that lets an English-language reader get into the "laboratory" of interpreting Aristotle. It's not polished, but neither is Aristotle. If you're sentenced to a lengthy jail term, you could take this volume, read and reread it with all Irwin's glossary-essays and cross-refs., and really start to understand how Aristotle thinks. If you were smart, you would end up disagreeing with some of Irwin's translations and interpretations. But it's a tremendous testimony to his interpretative labor that you could disagree in this way. (But if it's a general handle on Aristotle, as opposed to the Ethics, you want, you should really start with Irwin and Fine's Hackett "Selections"--NOT their "Introductory Readings" which deprives you of the glossary-and-notes apparatus really needed to get it.)

Amazing Translation - Amazing transfer to Kindle

After talking to the publisher about my concerns, which are outlined in my original review below, they have now produced a new version of the kindle edition of this book, thus the edit of this review, and its change from 1 star to 5 stars. The publishers have now put in the hyperlinks between text and note, wherever there is one, and a simple click on the note will take you back to the main text. It works really nicely. They have also included in the text the Bekker numbers in the form [1095a] - so if you need to do a lookup by Bekker, you can get as close as the section, and then the lines are listed in the text in groups of 10 - "[10]" - easy to see when scanning down from the section heading. The table to contents has also been updated to include all the Medieval Chapter headings under each book, so if you prefer to jump to a section via that means, this is also open to you.

All in all with this new edition of the kindebook, if you are studying this work, the kindle edition, I feel, surpasses the paperback in utility in almost every way. I also cannot credit the publishers enough for taking the criticism with good grace, responding to it and going far beyond the few criticisms originally made, and producing something which is vastly superior to what was produced before and possibly one of the best academic book transfers to kindle that I've seen.

This is a review specifically of the Kindle edition of this book.

I will start by saying that the contents of the book - the sensitive translation, the excellent notes etc are all absolutely top notch - and for these the book has the star I gave it.

My issue is that the Kindle transfer is lazy on the part of the publisher. The book is, in volume, about 40% the work itself, and 60% explanatory notes and commentary. The notes are 'end-note' style, marked by asterisks in the text.

There is no hyperlink or link of any kind in the kindle transfer to be able to get to a note, when you find a passage you want explanation on. Other books I have found (such as the Grube/Reeve translation of Plato's republic) all have the notes hyperlinked - so you can quickly get from text to note, and back to text. This edition has absolutely no way to find the note for a given section. The table of contents also just has a single item "Notes" to describe, what in the paperback is pages 172-314 - not very useful.

This means that unless you want to *just* read a translation, with no thought to what might have affected the translator's judgement in picking a particular word, or explanation of what difficult passages actually mean - in other words if you are buying this with a view to studying the text, pass over this and get the paperback instead.

I have not finished reading this book as yet. I can say that it is a great work and a good translation. It requires the reader to pay strict attention to what you are reading. Not a child's book at all. Advanced readers can understand it with little difficulty. This book should be required reading in every college curriculum, regardless of major, IMHO.

One of the best programs out there to teach kids spelling through play. Even if just for the lists of word sorts, or for the placement test, make sure you have this book in your collection. There are words and games from prereader level to high school. Also, great help for SAT.

Skips too many steps

As a university professor, I chose this book for a graduate course because it seemed to cover the same topics that I wanted to cover.
Unfortunately, after using it for a semester, I've found that the book always skips the key steps in a derivation. Often, it is only evident to the reader that steps have been skipped from the cryptic language used by the authors: "Using equilibrium and compatibility, the following expression results". Very important information is left out.
The book is so short on detail that it would be better if the authors simply published a stack of formulas.

Crappy Quality

I just got this book in the mail and am really disappointed in its quality. For $130 I was expecting a good quality binding and pages. I bought it new from amazon and I can barely open the pages because they are warped so badly. The binding is so fragile I am afraid all the pages will pop out of it if I open it all the way.

Prentice Hall - you guys should be ashamed of yourselves.

This book is the best resource on writing that I've found. While the The Longman Writer's Companion with Exercises: MLA Update Edition (4th Edition) is best for formatting essays and basic proofreading and The Gregg Reference Manual: A Manual of Style, Grammar, Usage, and Formatting Tribute Edition is superior for quickly checking a rule, this is definitely the book you should choose if you want to improve your overall writing.
Anything you specifically have questions on (i.e. sexist language, dangling modifiers, or the best way to organize evidence) will be easy to locate. There is a brief contents, detailed contents, index, and revision page, all of which are very clear and will surely point you to the correct pages. The way the book is set up is logical. There are six parts ("The Reading Process", "The Writing Process", "The Patterns of Development", "The Research Paper", "The Literary Paper and Exam Essay", and "A Concise Handbook"). Every part is divided further into chapters and then topics.
Throughout the book there are examples that truly help. Instead of giving the reader obviously bad examples, the book provides decent ones and then shows how they can be improved. There are checklists throughout for proofreading, writing, and formatting that summarize everything. The last section summarizes every common grammatical issue and component (from brackets to common spelling mistakes) and offers examples and practice exercises.

I am currently using this book in a college composition course. I find this book to be extrememly helpful in writing my essays. The book gives examples of different types of essays and even examples of parts of essays, like the Introduction and Conclusion. This book is easy to read and understand.

I had to pull some strings to get this book for my college freshman students because it was not on the "approved" list. It was worth the trouble! Students enjoy using this book, and they learn to write better essays, and most of them keep it after finishing my class. I love this book!

classic math stat test that I used to prepare for math qualifying exam at the University of Maryland

Hogg and Craig is one of my favorite texts. It is an intermediate text in mathematical statistics similar to Mood, Graybill and Boes. I took qualifying exams in mathematics for my Masters Degree at the University of Maryland in the early 1970s. One of the exams I took was in statistics. I had little formal training in statistics at the time. Hogg and Craig was the recommended text for the statistics exam. So I bought it and studied out of it on my own. It was very clear with excellent coverage of methods for deriving distributions for random variables and transformations of random variables. I passed my exams and got my highest grades on the statistics exam even though I had more training in abstract algebra. Hogg and Craig really helped. It has been revised since then to maintain currency with statistical developments but it still has maintained its clarity and usefulness. Most of the other reviews that are critical of it are way off base. I am sure that efforts have been made with the numerous revisions to keep the material up to date. Perhaps some critics are correct that it comes up short on some modern advances in Bayesian statistics and other computer-intensive statistical methods. But that should not tarnish its reputation as a classic text in mathematical statistics.

**This review is not based on book content, but on how it useful it was for me to fulfill my course requirement while saving a penny. **

I compared this book version with the original book that retails for more than 100 dollars page per page.
The content is the same, there are only slight differences, with the major one being that Chapter 11 is MISSING

.
- Table of Contents for the Economy Edition is not detailed, contains chapter headlines only. The U.S Version lists the subsections of every chapter.
- Economy Ed: cover is paperback, with a different design.
- The book is slightly larger than the U.S Version but letter size is the same.
- Some sections are labeled different. (For example Section 1.2.1 in the U.S Version will be 2.1 on the Economy Edition.) This should not cause confusion, as they are consistent.
- Answers to Selected Exercises are found after the exercises in the Economy Edition, rather than at the end of all the chapters. This actually seems better for me.
- IMPORTANT: One chapter Missing. The 11th Chapter title Bayesian Statistics is missing.

For me, it is not a big deal that the last chapter is missing as I can get copies from the school or ask a friend. The exercises are exactly the same!
Usually, many professors do not get to the last chapters. However, I recommend this to any student that has to buy the book for a course. Rental prices for the U.S version skyrocketed this week, almost a $100 now.
I wanted a book I could keep since Mathematics is my major.

I will do an update in a couple of months to review based on content.

Consider all these factors and I hope this review helps you to make the best choice.

The worst math stats book ever seen

Almost every page of the book contains references to other different chapters, examples, exercises, theorems. It's a pain to read this book, as you feel that you are reading several chapters at the same time. In addition, it is full of concept errors, oversights. I would NOT recommend this book to anyone.

FRANCISCO L. RIVERA-BATIZ is Associate Professor of Economics at Rutgers University and Visiting Professor of Regional Science at the University of Pennsylvania.

Luis Rivera-Batiz teaches at the Faculty of Management at McGill University, the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University, and the Faculty of Management at the University of Puerto Rico. Maria-Angels Oliva is Assistant Professor of Economics at ESCP-EAP, Paris

this book explains various aspects of international finance in a simple and lucid manner. the good thing about this book is that you dont have to an expert in economics or international finance to relish its contents. it explains most of the terms and defines them too. even terms like spot and forward rates are explained with ease. a must for the beginners in international finance
