Clear exposition. Also a very well-made book--so call me stupid.

Herewith, the dumbest (preliminary, in the sense of I just got it in the mail today) review of MacLane and Birkhoff, 3rd Edition that you'll read. This book is very well made, with quality paper, and a buckram binding Smyth-sewn in signatures. Also from a more substantive POV: The exposition seems clear. More to come as I work through the text. I guess some reviewers have read all 600 pages and worked all the problems? Fibbers!

Amazing Book

This is a fabulous book. I have had basically one year of effectively 'algebra for non-mathematicians' at a graduate level, and have a background in Physics and Engineering. I find this book to be the perfect next step in terms of understanding things a bit more deeply than Dummit&Foote, in particular because they bring in some wider issues and connect them to the basic material of group theory, ring theory, modules vector spaces etc. In other words it covers the same or similar material as Dummit & Foote, but adds in some wider examples (more lattice theory, operator theory) as well as a higher level of sophistication because it brings in a category theory perspective for example. It seems that this book is really oriented toward seeing the big mathematical picture implicit in lots of physics. So in that sense, for me, it's a fantastic mathematical physics book, without explicitly being so.

Beautiful exposition

Let's start off with the bad: Not having a marker for the end of each proof annoys me. Some of the terminology is a little awkward. (For example, the word "homomorphism" appears once in the entire text, to note it as an alternative to their usage of the word "morphism".) There are a few minor typos here and there. And that's it. I have nothing else really negative to say about this book.

I make no claims to being a math prodigy; I pursue it simply because I enjoy it. When I read math, it's a struggle. What I found so remarkable about this book is that I was not struggling, despite the complexity of the material. That's not to say I found nothing in here difficult, because it's all difficult to some degree by the very nature of the material, but that the moments of frustration were few and far between. I will admit that I had familiarity with probably about 30% of the material when starting, so it is possible my opinion would be different had I not known what a group was beforehand. I kind of doubt that though, the exposition seemed nearly ideal. Beyond being a smooth read, there was no overstatement. Everything said added to the content.

The book covers a lot of territory in only 600 pages, but none of it should be a surprise to see in an algebra text: groups, rings, modules, Galois theory, a little on categories, etc. I think the chapter on matrices should be pointed out in particular. This is a better explanation of how matrices and their entries can and ought to be interpreted than any other I have read, including Axler! Admittedly, Axler does a slightly better job with some of the other linear algebra topics, such as characteristic polynomials.

Prerequisites for this book are extremely slim - naïve familiarity with the real and complex number systems are the only absolute necessity. However, anyone taking this on with nothing more than the bare minimum is going to be in for quite a challenge. You should already have some comfort with reading texts filled with theorems and proofs.

This is possibly the best textbook I have encountered to date. If you want to learn algebra, I can't imagine a better single place to look to get a well-rounded exposure to the subject.

1. The translations take a middle road between a word for word translation of Aristotle's Greek and a more fluent but less accurate rendering in English prose. Where the translators have supplemented the Greek to make the English more readable, the additions are placed in brackets . Though sometimes I found the bracketed text unnecessary, it rarely interfered with my reading.

2. The explanatory notes provided are in many cases enlightening and in some cases they were indispensable to my easily grasping what Aristotle is saying, or might be saying--as the notes are often careful to distinguish.

3. This book extracts sections from Aristotle's works judged by scholars to be the most important and influential parts of his various works. In addition, helpful subject headings are discreetly inserted throughout nearly every page of the book between the different sections of a selection.

This is a great resource for the student of Aristotle or for anyone wanting to dig into his writing.

A classic in real analysis.

This book, as far as I consider it, is a classic. Although it has some errata and stuff, it is one of the best books ever written in Real Analysis. I am happy to managed get this specific edition since the author didn't manage to publish its fourth edition, while it was Fitz Patrick the one who edited that edition. I think that books are more valuable when the authors are the only ones who edit them, otherwise I don't think they're worth reading. At least that's my opinion.

Then, about the book, it takes to know some modern algebra, set theory and basic analysis to study from this fine book. I haven't seen a book that specially teaches Daniell's integral and this one does. The book is rich on references where one could further study material related to real analysis to the higher level. I think this book will be very useful to serious mathematicians and to those self-studying guys who love the rigour.

Classic text on measure & integration theory

Many people criticize this book as unclear and unnecessarily abstract, but I think these comments are more appropriately directed at the subject than at this book and its particular presentation. I find this classic to be one of the best books on measure theory and Lebesgue integration, a difficult and very abstract topic. Royden provides strong motivatation for the material, and he helps the reader to develop good intuition. I find the proofs and equations exceptionally easy to follow; they are concise but they do not omit as many details as some authors (i.e. Rudin). Royden makes excellent use of notation, choosing to use it when it clarifies and no more--leaving explanations in words when they are clearer. The index and table of notation are excellent and contribute to this book's usefulness as a reference.

The construction of Lebesgue measure and development of Lebesgue integration is very clear. Exercises are integrated into the text and are rather straightforward and not particularly difficult. It is necessary to work the problems, however, to get a full understanding of the material. There are not many exercises but they often contain crucial concepts and results.

This book contains a lot of background material that most readers will either know already or find in other books, but often the material is presented with an eye towards measure and integration theory. The first two chapters are concise review of set theory and the structure of the real line, but they emphasize different sorts of points from what one would encounter in a basic advanced calculus book. Similarly, the material on abstract spaces leads naturally into the abstract development of measure and integration theory.

This book would be an excellent textbook for a course, and I think it would be suitable for self-study as well. Reading and understanding this book, and working most of the problems is not an unreachable goal as it is with many books at this level. This book does require a strong background, however. Due to the difficult nature of the material I think it would be unwise to try to learn this stuff without a strong background in analysis or advanced calculus. A student finding all this book too difficult, or wanting a slower approach, might want to examine the book "An Introduction to Measure and Integration" by Inder K. Rana, but be warned: read my review of that book before getting it.

Maybe good as a supplement, or a first time looking at the material

There are three books that are usually used for a first graduate course in analysis, including measure theory, namely Rudin's Real and Complex Analysis, Folland's Real Analysis, and Royden's book. Of the three, I would say Royden's book is the easiest, both in terms of the exposition, material, and exercises. Of the three, Royden is the only one to fully develop the Lebesgue measure and the associated integral before developing a more general theory of measure and integration. Furthermore, he does not develop Hilbert and Banach space theory, the very basics of functional analysis, to anywhere near the extent that Folland and Rudin do.

There is some debate as to whether it is better to start with the Lebesgue integral, and then talk about abstract integration, or the other way around. Personally, I found the development of the Lebesgue integral a bit tedious; the whole thing works a bit better when you first talk about abstract integration, which really isn't a terribly difficult concept, prove the basic integration theorems, then show how to construct an outer measure, and suddenly, the Lebesgue measure and integral just falls into place. I'm not sure anything is lost in the process.

The biggest shortcoming in this book would have to be the exercises: for the most part, they are not very difficult, particularly when you compare them to say, Rudin's text. For the most part, the exercises are fairly trivial, and if they are difficult, or require a bit of creativity, Royden often gives you lots and lots of hand-holding, sometimes even in the form of sketching out the proof for you. In spite of the relatively low difficulty level, most of the exercises are fairly instructive, in so far as they highlight, elucidate, and expand upon the material.

For the most part, this book is not bad. It makes a good supplement to a book like Rudin or Folland, as it is less abstract, and does a better job motivating the material. The exercises here can work well if you want some extra practice that won't take up too much time. If you're a student of econ, or physics, or you just feel like learning graduate-level real analysis, then this book is probably adequate (although I should qualify that statement by saying that I know nothing of econ and little of physics). But if you are a serious student of mathematics, particularly the pure variety, this is really not the book you should be using. It is just too easy.

translation mix up on digital copy

For those of you who may be philosophy majors or have another reason to be particular about the translation you receive be aware that this title as a kindle e-book is not translated by Lewis White Beck as each of the photos of the book suggest. Instead when i ordered it as an e-book I received a Thomas Kingsmill Abbott translation. This to some may not seem important, but translations hold important differences also the Thomas Kingsmill Abbott translation is abundantly available for free rather than paying $5.

A Masterwork of Moral Philosophy

Kant's Groundwork (or Foundations) of the Metaphysics of Morals is probably the single most influential work of philosophical ethics since Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics. While Kant himself considered this a sort of introduction to ethical thinking, it's come to be his most influential and widely read work on ethics. Despite its length--it's less than a hundred pages--this is a work of remarkable depth and intellectual insight.
This isn't an easy work, however. It needs to be read and re-read (and, I suppose, re-read) to be fully understood and appeciated. I've never found Kant as difficult and obscure as his reputation would suggest, but as a writer of philosophical prose he's certainly not the caliber of, say, Hume or Descartes. As many have noted, Kant is the first great philosopher of the modern era to have been an academic, and it shows. He writes long, meandering sentences, and the organization of his works leaves quite a bit to be desired. Furthermore, his penchant for arcane terminology and architechtonic can make his work seem more forbidding than it is. Still, Kant's ideas in the Groundwork, while subtle and sometimes elusive, are profound and original, and this book is a must-read for anyone interested in philosophical ethics. I should also note that the importance of this book isn't solely historical since there has been a recent resurgence of Kantian moral thinking in the English-speaking world.
Kant's aim in the Groundwork is to discover the fundamental principle of morality. In the first section he attempts to derive this fundamental principle from odinary moral thought. In particular, he attempts to derive this principle from considerations concerning what is unconditionally good. Kant claims that the only thing that is unconditionally good is a good will. Moreover, its goodness is not a matter of the results of acting on a good will; it is good in itself. As a matter of fact, Kant claims that the results of an action done with a good will and the aims and inclinations of the agent with the good will are morally insignificant.
What, then, is it to act with a good will? It is, Kant argues, a matter of doing one's duty for duty's sake, regardless of one's feeling and the results of doing so. What is it to act from duty's sake? It is to act from principles that accord with the fundamental principle of morality. And here we get the first formulation of the fundamental principle of morality: act only on maxims that you can consistently will to be universal laws. In other words, if one is unable to will the principle of one's action to become a universal law, the action is morally impermissible.
In the second section of the Groundwork Kant attempts to draw the same conclusion from some philosophical points about the nature of duty. He begins by claiming that our knowledge of our duty is a priori and based on the exercise of reason. He then argues that facts about our duties are necessary facts, and that this shows that they must be based on a categorical imperative: that is, that our duties apply to us insofar as we are rational beings, irrespective of the contingent aspects of their nature. And, Kant argues, the one categorical imperative is the fundamental principle of morality mentioned above. He then applies this principle to some examples in order to display just how it grounds our duties in particular cases.
The rest of the second section is filled with lots of interesting, ableit abstruse, ideas. First, Kant attempts to ground the categorical imperative in something that is of unconditional worth. What is that something? The existence of rational beings, which, he says, is an end in itself. And this leads to a second formulation of the categorical imperative: (ii) act only in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in the person of yourself or someone else, as an end and never merely as a means.
This section also includes a third formulation of the categorical imperative: (iii) act only on maxims that you could will to become universal laws legislated by your own will. This formulation encapsulates Kant's claim that we can achieve autonomy only by acting in accordance with the moral law. Conformity with the moral law does not constrain our freedom since we legislate the moral law for ourselves. The moral law is not forced on us from without; its source is to be found in our own rational nature. Indeed, it is only by acting morally that we are able to achieve genuine freedom by transcending the contingent desires and inclinations that are beyond our control.
Of course, that doesn't come close to summing up the Groundwork. But it's a start.
This edition of the Groundwork, which has been translated by Lewis White Beck, is a readable one. It is, perhaps, easier to read than many other editions of the Groundwork, though it may provide for this readability at the cost of some accuracy. Beck's edition also includes a copy of Kant's essay "What is Enlightenment?" along with some slight editorial material. There's a short, albeit useful, introductory essay in which Beck sketches the main outlines of the argument of the Groundwork's three sections and considers and dismisses some common objections to Kant's moral theory. The editorial also material includes a very short biographical sketch and a slight and out-of-date bibliography. Neither of these is very helpful. There are better editions of the Groundwork out there--see, for example, the editions published by Cambridge (translation by Gregor) and by Harper (translation by Paton)--but this is fine edition for the student and the general reader. And it comes at a good price.
