costly, quality, but light

This is a institutional text book. The book is printed and bound with high quality. The pages are colorful and the content is meaningful, but very light on substance. It's almost like a colorfully illustrated outline for a science program that covers all the bases but doesn't teach much itself.

I homeschool my boys, ages 5 and 6 and I bought this 2nd grade Science book based on the preview at the publisher's website. From the preview I could tell this wouldn't be too difficult for my 5 year old to understand. Later grade texts understandably begin to demand more independent reading and writing from the students.

I also purchased McGraw Hill's "Science" Grade 2 (with the frog on the front). These two books from the same publisher are totally unique -- they don't share any pages verbatim -- but they contain virtually the same content and I would characterize them exactly the same way -- comprehensive but shallow overviews.

To use this book effectively, a teacher should plan on incorporating a number of experiments or 'labs' in their lessons. The books offer some suggestions that could be a lot better if you consider getting a little more involved. For example, the books cover "simple machines" (although they only describe about half of them in what amounts to a fairly incomplete unit). As an example, they suggest using two pencils, one as a fulcrum and the other as a lever to lift a notebook. It's not hard to imagine a better fulcrum and lever to demo for your students. I found some stuff in the garage that was a lot more exciting. Admittedly, I'm not able to offer up elaborate experiments at a rapid pace like "Bill Nye the Science Guy" -- but I can certainly recommend following up your own demos with his (available on Youtube and elsewhere) to complement this comparatively uninspired book.

Awesome for science education at 2nd grade level..

This is a beautiful book, filled with tons of pictures and experiments to do at home. While it is a standard text book for the public school system, it does a good job of teaching the basics of science, and giving you experiments to learn with after you have learned the facts.

About the Author
Linda Meeks and Philip Heit are emeritus professors of Health Education in the College of Education at The Ohio State University. Linda and Philip previously owned Meeks Heit Publishing, a publishing company that specialized in producing health education textbooks, video, CD-ROM, and multimedia programs for grades K-12 and college. Linda and Philip sold Meeks Heit Publishing Company and the McGraw-Hill Companies acquired their product line and works closely with them. Linda and Philip remain actively involved in the health education profession, continuing to write textbooks. To date, they have co-authored more than 250 different health education textbooks that are used by millions of students preschool through college. They have recently produced new editions of Totally Awesome(r) Health K 8 and Health and Wellness 9 12. Linda and Philip continue to assist state departments of education and as well as thousands of school districts, develop comprehensive school health education curricula and implement the National Health Education Standards. Their textbooks and other materials continue to be used throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Japan, Mexico, England, Puerto Rico, Spain, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bermuda, and the Virgin Islands. Randy Page is a professor of Health at Brigham Young University. He has written more than 75 articles in professional journals, consulted with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and conducted research on adolescenthealth in the United States, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. He is co-author of Totally Awesome Teaching Strategies for Teaching Health; Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco: Totally Awesome Teaching Strategies; and Violence Prevention: Totally Awesome Teaching Strategies for Safe and Drug-Free Schools.

Good Health Book

Our Health 11 class used the Meeks Heit Health and Wellness textbook. I really enjoyed reading through this book because it was easy to navigate and exemplified the vocabulary words. Because our class did not have enough health books for every student, I purchased a new copy of his book from an Amazon.com independent seller for less than $5.00. This book was in perfect condition.

Therefore, while I believe this is a good health book, it would be unnecessary to pay the price Amazon.com requires when you can purchase a perfectly good copy from an independent seller and save your money.

Martin Buber (1878 1965), is among the foremost twentieth-century philosophers of human relations and Jewish thought. There is a sense that this is one of the most important book in my life. I have re-read it for the last 3 summers and i have found different things that i needed. Buber has a distinct method of communication that pulls from you who you are... i hear his subtlety in my ear even now. Buber is brilliant.

This is a institutional text book. The book is printed and bound with high quality. The pages are colorful and the content is meaningful, but very light on substance. It's almost like a colorfully illustrated outline for a science program that covers all the bases but doesn't teach much itself.

I homeschool my boys, ages 5 and 6 and I bought this 2nd grade Science book based on the preview at the publisher's website. From the preview I could tell this wouldn't be too difficult for my 5 year old to understand. Later grade texts understandably begin to demand more independent reading and writing from the students.

I also purchased McGraw Hill's "Science: A Closer Look" Grade 2 (with the bee on the front). These two books from the same publisher are totally unique -- they don't share any pages verbatim -- but they contain virtually the same content and I would characterize them exactly the same way -- comprehensive but shallow overviews.

To use this book effectively, a teacher should plan on incorporating a number of experiments or 'labs' in their lessons. The books offer some suggestions that could be a lot better if you consider getting a little more involved. For example, the books cover "simple machines" (although they only describe about half of them in what amounts to a fairly incomplete unit). As an example, they suggest using two pencils, one as a fulcrum and the other as a lever to lift a notebook. It's not hard to imagine a better fulcrum and lever to demo for your students. I found some stuff in the garage that was a lot more exciting. Admittedly, I'm not able to offer up elaborate experiments at a rapid pace like "Bill Nye the Science Guy" -- but I can certainly recommend following up your own demos with his (available on Youtube and elsewhere) to complement this comparatively uninspired book.

Buying textbooks for children, (esp. for people who home-school) are extremely expensive. We bought this science book, used and in good condition. I was satisfied in how it was packaged as well as the condition of the book. The pictures are engaging, the experiments are affordable and the content is fulfilling. From what I notice, the workbook may not be needed, because the textbook has many questions and activities. My rating is 5 stars, but I WOULD NOT PAY FULL PRICE!!! IF YOU CAN BUY IT USED AND IN GOOD CONDITION....PLEASE GO FOR IT (b/c the asking price for new, is NOT a good bargain or deal)

This book is a very simply written text book with some interesting, simple and fun science experiments. All of which you can do with young children to explain the basics of science. My son loves reading through each lesson. He is in 1st grade, but finds the writing to be extremely easy to understand, while still introducing him to new terms. The pictures are beautiful and really pull you into the book. Definitely a must buy for the homeschooling, tutoring, learning-time providing-type of parent. I would say that a parent could even start reading this to a child as young as 3 years of age and it would manage to keep their attention while still being extremely enjoyable.

I haven't found anything better.

Brown treats the material with respect. Unlike Graves for instance who is reductionistic in his approach, Brown assumes that Hesiod is trying to make sense of the experience of the world in a way that profound and meticulous. Not being a Greek scholar, I can't judge how often he gets it right, but as an approach to the Greek myths, I haven't found anything better.
